David Pittsinger, Eugene O'Neill, and Patricia as Carlotta (Karli Cadel)

These pictures from Glimmerglass Festival's world premiere, Blizzard on Marblehead Neck, marked my return to opera after almost a decade, as Carlotta O'Neill opposite my husband, David Pittsinger as the poet, Eugene.  Francesca Zambello, to whom I will always be grateful, invited me to Glimmerglass for this pairing as the two tormented O'Neills.  

“Patricia Schuman was a late addition to the cast, learning Margaret just a few weeks before the first rehearsal, and yet she met the part as if destiny. Hers is a voice with range - not only the notes, but also an edge that she deployed to become more domineering, haughty, or vulnerable. 
Schuman doesn't change roles, except to the extent that she steers Margaret's evolution from a steely woman who cares not what the world thinks of her to a needy has-been who comes upon the realization that the only society she's ever enjoyed is that for which she has paid.
Finally, she is a tired embodiment of the idea that everything in the world used to be better, including, perhaps, all the music in it.”
